The archaeological teacher, who is majoring in study of the vestige of the Jomon period, had explained dating methods of relics, and many kinds of earthenware and stone implement until September.
In October, he had field trip at buried cultural property center in Tama. Accessories, earthenware, stone implements and a variety of implements were exhibited there. We can touch them and we were explained the way of resining to keep relics. In the excavation garden next to the center, three pit houses are restored, periodically hold event that modern people experience food and shelter of Jomon people.
In November, field trip was held at Tama newtown No.446 excavation and the students see a dig with their own eyes.
There is no restored house like the excavation garden, but are only pits, many pits. The pits, which are traces of building houses and putting pillars, were dug up by workersf scoops from flat ground. But they never dig pits randomly. Stratum of the site which was grubbed by excavators is orange colored soil of the Stone Age. But at the pits which Jomon people dug, black soil of the Jomon period covered them. So experts of digging can distinguish traces of houses from flat ground at first sight.
We were taught the change of pit house forms, fireplace, oven, and the mystery of the pots which are buried at the entrance of the houses. Jomon people believed in animism. So they handled anything respectfully and treated broken implements politely.
There are several pitfalls which caught animals like wild boars. Over 2m hole scared me of falling. In case of shallow pitfalls, they stuck bamboo grass on the bottom of the hole. The tip of the bamboo grass is not sharp. It does not kill falling animals. But it does not set them free. If falling animals got hurt badly and died, they would become rot before people patrol the holes. And meat and fur of them are not available. In addition, other animals hate the smell of blood, which the prey shed in the hole and they donft approach it.
The dig field was seen the site of construction. There ware many dump trucks and very long conveyer belt to carry the earth dug up. There are many workers. I heard that they are 80 people on weekdays. Neighboring site is about to be dug up and there are same huge crane.
Tama area would urge digs on a large scale. But the main purpose is not the study of excavation archaeology, but the housing development along the Keio Line. It is good that digs of excavations are advanced by land development. But the study are not able to improve carefully and finally the excavations are removed. However, human do not act when benefit isnft yielded. So I thought that it is nice that by land development many excavations were discovered and the horizon of archeology becomes wide. [526words]
